Default Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Review Discussion

When it comes to the whole concept of compact ultrazooms, I'm a fan. It seems that every manufacturer has at least one of these small cameras with long lenses in their line these days, and it's really no surprise why. They're the photographic equivalent of duct tape: not always the ideal or most elegant tool for the job, but applicable in a whole lot of picture-taking situations just the same.

    Hi,

Can someone please explain me the Manual Focus Option.
What does the scale mean in Manual Focus mode. It starts from 0cm, 10cm, 50cm,3m, infinity (which can be set by setting the dial)

Suppose I point the camera in open (essentially looking at infinity) and ask it to focus at 3m (or 50cm for that matter) and there is no object in center of the frame at 3m but there are objects on lower edge at approx at 3m. What will the camera focus at?

How do I use this manual focus to click for Macro mode?

    Thanks in Advance

Manual focus on the PowerShot models is purely distance based. If you set the focus at 3m on its distance scale, it will focus at 3m - regardless of what's in the frame.

It's probably easiest to just use the zoom preview on the screen to confirm focus visually: the SX200 gives you enough detail in the preview that you should be able to pretty well determine whether your subject's in focus or not just by looking at the screen.

Using manual focus is the same for macro shots, though the focusing scale gets a little more precise (moving only a few mm per click at the "macro" end of the scale).

great thanks, this info is good ...
    One more question ..
So inorder to get maximum depth of field with lowest f-stop number and minimum focal length. (In essence I am settin to approx. calculated hyperfocal distance with lets say is 3m)

I simply focus at 3m and approx. I should get depth from 1m (or so) to infinity

    am i right in thinking?
