Nikon D5000 First Thoughts Discussion
Whether you like to call them entry-level, advanced amateur, "prosumer," or travel DSLRs, there is a huge market for lightweight DLSR cameras priced below $1,000. In fact, this is the single largest market for DSLR camera sales. According to figures released from Nikon, sales of the entry-level D40, D40X, and D60 cameras account for roughly 80 percent of all Nikon DSLR sales. It's no wonder that Nikon was so eager to take the new technology from their mid-graded D90 and put it into a lower-priced entry-level DSLR ... the new Nikon D5000.

Re: Nikon D5000 First Thoughts
Manual focus on videos is something that would not scare me; in fact it can be work very well. I had the RCA CKC 020 video camera with a portable vhs unit. That camera had manual focus only. It also only had a B/W viewfinder. Before I shot, I zoomed into my subject area and focused on that area and then went back to wide angle. This way, when it came to zooming, I knew I was in focus when I did my shooting. So if I had the Nikon, I would work that camera the same way which means to try to plan your video shots. If they are unplanned, keep the lens on infinity.

Re: Nikon D5000 First Thoughts
i'd love to see the full review with comparisons to D60 (1 step lower, as Polish nikon site suggested) and D90 (one step higher). of course, it would be simply sweet to show how well does it compare to canon's 500D (as it has 1000D that's often compared to D60 and 50D or 5D, can't recall which one :P, as D90 rival), the obvious rival... i wonder which one is better in terms of image quality, af speed, feats real use... not to mention that i wonder which company did a better job at putting the movie mode in their consumer/prosumer dslr lines

at the moment i'm torn between those models - i like the d90 feel, but i also know i won't use all its abilities... but the continuous mode speed, af functionality, low noise in high iso and great quality with magnificent controls... on the other hand, on paper, d5000 is only 0.5 frames slower... is it even real? or just paper scam to make people believe that d90 is the better one, the one to buy :P after all d5000 shares the same cmos unit, the same if not newer expeed cpu (or with new firmware)... some new "consumer grade" options such as those easly available scene modes with more options in the effects tabs... (that's what i managed to see while playing with the two at a local electronics shop) the better lcd that d90 offers lacks the "twist'n'shoot" comfort :P plus higher res = slightly weaker battery, isn't it? :P
i also wonder if nikon will release d5000 with 18-200mm great glasses as a kit (there's this offer on d90 :P). VR of 4 stops, usm, if, great switchability in m/a af modes... and the quality... that would make the camera great offer. especially since canon offers the new 500D with it's IS 18-200mm glasses...
i'm really waiting for the full review, hope to see some answers i await :P it's high time i got myself proper digital slr
neither compact nor hybrid works as i want them to :P maybe your review will shed some light on whether to buy this new model from nikon, or choose one of its brethren, or join with canon's model range advocatees with either 450D or 500D :P or maybe it'll be on par with olympus 620 model
ah, that waiting
