    Well, that is a good start at sorting out the differences in design and specs. Personally I'm dismayed that many casual shooters assume that more zoom is automatically a better lens. This zoom trend is getting about as silly as the more Mp is better drum beat.

    A whole different approach, but performance differences are also important. And very hard to nail down. Vital to sorting out whether a DSLR is really worth the effort over a compact. Dunno how many requirements I've seen for "amazing pictures", where it later developed that they just wanted the darned thing in focus and properly exposed.

    Dunno how many requirements I've seen for "amazing pictures", where it later developed that they just wanted the darned thing in focus and properly exposed.
    And people want it all - amazing pictures, more megapixels, long zoom, low light ability - for under $200.
