Panasonic HDC-TM700 HD Camcorder Review Discussion
I’ve been excited about the Panasonic HDC-TM700 since its debut at PMA 2010. Panasonic set the bar high last year with the excellent HDC-TM300, so as its follow-up HD camcorder, I expected the TM700 to have even better performance and more exciting new features.

On paper, Panasonic didn’t disappoint by including Intelligent Resolution technology (digital zoom with optical zoom quality), facial recognition, 35mm wide-angle Leica lens, 3-inch LCD screen, and 1080p at 60 frames per second (fps) recording mode.

Re: Panasonic HDC-TM700 HD Camcorder Review Discussion
IMHO the stills that were taken by this camera look far better than mostly anything of a point and shoot camera on the market. I would think that the three RBG pickups had alot to do with that. The still images took on a factor I call "image liveliness". The shadow details look very impressive to me as well. I thought the color quality was superb on the stills. If the video quality looks anything like the stills, this would be some great video camera.
What is missing on this report is an opinion on the audio quality and reproduction in both 5.1 and 2.0. If I had done this report, I would have had files dummed down to dvd quality if at all possible . This would allow me to test the audio on a 5.1 channel system with also offers stereo, virtual 2 channel and Dolby Pro-Logic 2 movie. My friend has a Sony dvd 403 that shoots in 5.1 surround. We played discs he photographed on two 5.1 systems and the results were stunning to say the least. In fact that camera recorded center back surround like EX on its built in microphone. I gave a copy of a disc to a friend who had a 5.1 surround system and his comment on the audio of this camera was "astounding".
This Panasonic unit offers stereo too. In this case I would have recorded in two channel stereo and played that recording back in stereo snf virtual mode whether it be built into the dvd player or receiver. The receiver also has DPL-2 movie. The reason is that some stereo mics can pick up sounds all around the mic and can open up matrix surround sound when using virtual or DPL-2 movie. Some receivers offer matrix decoders that may do better but I have not ever played with Logic 7 from Lexicon or "Ears" from Nad as examples to see if they were better than DPL-2 movie. I made many stereo recordings out in the field for a period between 1986 and1991 with linear stereo and hi-fi
portable vhs units and received quite good surround sound matrix results.
