Default Fujifilm Finepix F40fd Digital Camera Announced

The new 8 megapixel Fujifilm Finepix F40fd is a successor to the 6 megapixel F20. As the "fd" nomenclature signifies, the F40fd also includes Fujifilm's facial detection technology that uses a dedicated processor to detect up to 10 faces in a picture efficiently. The camera also features a 3x optical zoom and 2.5 inch, 230K pixel LCD. The F40fd will come available in March 2007 for $299.

The sixth generation Super CCD-HR processor looks as if it will continue Fujifilm's reputation of providing low noise images at higher ISO settings. In this case, the F40fd will be able to shoot up to ISO 2000.

A "Dual Shot" mode takes two shots, in succession, one with the flash and one without. After the shot is taken, the images are displayed side by side for the photographer to choose which one to keep

The Picture Stabilization feature adjusts the sensitivity and shutter speed to counter-act blur caused by hand shake. The camera takes into account subject movement and low light conditions.

If you do need to use a flash, the F40fd also includes Fujifilm's i-Flash which can vary the flash intensity according to the scene conditions. It also utilizes the high ISO capability of the camera to provide shots that are not too washed out.

    Additional Features:

    • xD/SD slot that accepts both types of media
    • New icon-based user interface with brief descriptions
    • 14 scene modes
    • Infrared image transfer capability
    • Lithium-ion battery good for up to 300 shots
    • Movie capture modes of 640x480 and 320x240 at 30 frames per second
    • Exposure modes: program auto (no manual modes)
    • White balance: auto, Preset (Fine, Shade, Fluorescent light (Daylight), Fluorescent light (Warm White), Fluorescent light (Cool White), Incandescent light), Custom
    • Focus ranges: normal: 60cm to infinity; macro: 7-80cm (wide angle)
    • Focus areas: center and multi
    • Focus assist lamp
    • Dimensions: 3.8”(W) × 2.3”(H) × 0.9” (D)

Hmm, I guess the big thing with the f40fd over the f31fd is that it now accepts SD cards, that might actually be worth waiting around for. But judging from the specs on this camera there is going to be another model out, probably soon after this one. At least judging by the amount of shots it can take compared to the F30 (300 vs 580 according to Fujifilm) and the lower ISO. The only thing going for it is the SD slot.

There is also the resolution bump. The F31fd is a 6 megapixel (the F40fd is 8 MP). Not a huge difference if you don't make large prints, but I think you're right about the max ISO. I think I'd rather have ISO 3200 at 6MP than ISO 2000 at 8MP.

Talking Re: Fujifilm Finepix F40fd Digital Camera Announced

The F40fd is the replacement of the F20 not the F31fd. Except for the 8Mp sensor, the option to use SD cards and the new user interfase in screen, the F31 is more advanced, with a bigger battery, shutter and aperture preferred exposure modes and ability to use ISO 3200.

Its Kind of interesting how Fujifilm is introducing its new cameras, typically it seems that a manufacturer sends its most advanced tech out first and then giving lower end pieces. I wonder why Fujifilm is doing it this way.

They might be saving more advanced cameras for the PMA show, which concentrates just on the imaging industry, and is coming up in March.

Also, Fujifilm likes to make sure that all price points are covered. If you keep an eye on things, camera releases are actually quite predictable:

Looking in our archives, here is the CES line-up from Fujifilm last year: Fujifilm Digital Cameras At CES: Finepix V10, Finepix A400/A500, Finepix F470

Then, here is their PMA announcement: Fujifilm Finepix F30, Finepix F650, Finepix A600 Digital Cameras Announced
