Default Canon PowerShot SX30 IS First Look Discussion

When Canon launched the 35x optical zoom PowerShot SX30, consumers and enthusiasts wondered how the lens would perform at the telephoto end of that monster focal range. We're working on a full analysis, but for now we have some sample images as we tackle this question.

The new battery may indeed be lighter, but it doesn't last as long either. It doesn't even last much longer than piss poor alkaline batteries lasted in the SX20, and is no match to AA nimh or lithium batteries. The weight is about the same too, although it's hard to really compare since they listed of the weight of the SX20 without batteries and the SX30 with the battery. I would guess that the SX20 would be about 2 ounces heavier with lithium batteries.

I wish they had done like Pentax and offered a battery bay design that allows either type of battery to be used.

I've had an S3IS for years and absolutely love it. I saw no reason to move to an S5IS, I considered moving to an SX20IS for the greater zoom capability, but now I WANT an SX30IS.

I am turned off by the battery choice. Double A's are convenient, I have a ton of rechargeable AA batteries, and if I ever found myself with dead batteries a local convenience store would have temp replacements.

    Still... want this camera.
