Err, all of those thumbnails look underexposed. Same when you look at the originals?

I view the shots on a 24" HP LCD monitor calibrated to 6500 Kelvin and 2.2 gamma greypoint. To the extent that they mostly preserve highlight detail at the expense of shadow detail I like their appearance - they seem OK on my monitor. The histograms for each largely bear this out - 3 shots have no loss of highlights, 2 have slight loss and only the pier shot has a more sizeable loss of highlights.

I much prefer to retain highlight detail and let the shadows look more like shadows than to go the other way - I think it looks more natural this way, certainly much closer to what the eye sees.

Exposure is a subjective quantity - when I shot portraits on film I'd always overexpose women by about 1/3 to 1/2 stop, and underexpose men the same. That tended to hide minor skin imperfections on the gals and bring them out on the guys, making them look more masculine. At least, that was my theory...........

These shots were all aperture priority and default settings, so exposure metering was the multi method.
