Canon Rebel XS officially launched in US
Although Canon's Rebel XS has already been released internationally in the form of the Canon EOS 1000D, the new Rebel has been officially launched in US markets today.

Combining technology from Canon's previous-generation XTi with some key upgrades from the all-new Rebel XSi, the XS represents Canon's first purpose-designed true entry-level DSLR. The camera features the XTi's 10.1 megapixel sensor, a seven-point AF system, and a 2.5-inch LCD with live view technology.

An impressive JPEG burst rate of 3.0 frames per second is limited only by the capacity of your memory card, adding a unique touch to Canon's most basic SLR model.
Final US pricing has also been confirmed: the XS, which should be available from retailers next month, will ship with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens for around $699.99.
To learn more about what the new XS brings to the table, take a look at last month's international product launch announcement.

Re: Canon Rebel XS officially launched in US
It's gonna be a best seller, especially at that price point. It's going to give Pentax, Olympus, and Sony a run for their money in the low end, mainstream DSLR market.

I think you're right. Canon has the "known quantity" factor down, and building a model custom-designed for new DSLR users is the strategy to stay competitive in this market, I believe.
