When Sony first announced, TransferJet, its high speed, close proximity wireless file transfer technology earlier this year, lots of questions about timetable and implementation remained unanswered. A bit more clarification came late last month, however, with the announcement that 14 other electronics manufacturers have agreed to join Sony in developing specifications for new technology via the TransferJet Consortium.

Most of major camera manufacturers, including Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Kodak, and Samsung, are represented within the organization.

Combining the close-proximity transfer capabilities of Bluetooth at speeds of up to 560 Mb/s and promised "tap to transfer" simplicity, the appeal of TransferJet for moving large files like images from cameras to computers or other mobile devices is clear.

In early releases about the technology, Sony promised to "actively promote the use of TransferJet across the consumer electronics industry," and the convocation of the TransferJet Consortium is the latest and most visible step yet in this direction.
