Default Canon PowerShot A2000 IS Review Discussion

Canon's PowerShot A-series digital cameras enjoy an almost legendary reputation for affordability, practicality, usability, durability and dependability, excellent image quality, and remarkable ease of use. Because of this high degree of consumer respect and confidence, A-series Canons have consistently been U.S. and international sales leaders.

    Thanks for the excellent review.

Maybe it's my imagination but the A2000's picture quality looks more saturated than my A720. I wonder if Canon tweaked the default saturation?

I'm disappointed that Canon chose to eliminate the viewfinder and manual exposure controls found in the A720. However, the A2000 still looks like a very good camera overall.

This is a decent little camera, but it's maddening that Canon decided to go in the wrong direction with this camera. I can understand getting rid of the ovf, but they should've retained manual controls; it would've cost them little to nothing. If nothing else, they should've kept the a720is around. I wanted to buy the a720is replacement to have a portable camera to carry at all times, but I don't think I can stomach paying a720is prices for a crippled camera. Hopefully we're all wrong, and this isn't the real a720is replacement.

I had wondered that as well, but Canon seems to be standing strong in the position that manual exposure control is basically gone from the A series (well, the A590 is hanging around for the moment, but presumably not forever).

I wonder what Canon's post-purchase research says about what percentage of customers actually use manual exposure controls? It may be that they've found that only a small (but vocal) minority of buyers really wants manual control, but even so, as you said, I can't imagine it costs much to keep those sorts of functions.

Good call. Since the A720 IS was targeted toward more serious shooters and the A2000 IS is targeted toward more casual users, I believe your saturation observation is correct.

I really like the A2000 IS, however I'd have liked it better with an OVF, manual controls, and a decent handgrip. It is a nice P&S digicam and I've shot some good pictures with it, but I think Canon made a mistake changing the "A" series. I think it likely that the "A" series old target audience will migrate to other brands to get OVF and rudimentary manual controls

Canon says the A2000 IS is the A720 IS's replacement.

I agree, it might have saved Canon a decent per unit amount to get rid of the OVF, but the manual controls probably cost next to nothing, on a per unit basis. Corporations often make subjective decisions that they later come to regret - remember new Coke?
