Hello, first post here so I'm not sure if this is the proper location or forum but it seemed it would fit best here.

So I was elected the Historian for my High School band, and my job is to take pictures to use for a slideshow that I show at the end of the year. I currently have a Canon PowerShot A480 10 MP camera, (quite a weak and old camera) and I'm wondering if a camera like that would be suitable to what I'm trying to do. Most of the photography I do will be at football games with the only light being the stadium lights, and if it works for those shots I would hope it would work for when I need it during the day as well. I don't want to go broke buying a camera but I do have some cash to spend and would be willing to spend no more than 200. The camera I've been looking at is the PowerShot SX150 IS but I'm not as well versed in cameras as some of the people here may be.

Thanks in advance!

Just got back from vacation and was utterly disappointed by the quality of night pictures (too much blur, or too much noise, no sweet spot) and the dullness of day pictures from my Fujifilm Finepix J10. So I am looking into getting a new camera. I'm deciding between an MILC or a more advanced point-n-shoot. I thought about DSLR for a bit, but their bulkiness is just not worth it. So, any recommendations for cameras, or articles that touches on this topic are welcome!

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
$1000, new or used

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
The smaller the better.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
10MP

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x)
Standard will suffice, but ultrazoom is a plus.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
10

Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)?
Not if the built-in modes will do the job.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
Taking pictures of food, cars, and scenery (especially in low light conditions)

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
No

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
Yes, a lot

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Rarely

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
No Apple. Oh wait... No.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?
None so far, but I read good reviews of Sony's NEX models.

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
Panoramic picture is a huge plus, otherwise no.

Help please - Trying to choose between Panasonic DMC FZ200 & Sony DSC Hx200/300

I have done a fair bit of reading both here and on other review sites and still feel very conflicted about what I should get for a new camera.

I have done a fair bit of reading both here and on other review sites and still feel very conflicted about what I should get for a new camera. I guess I had hoped one would stand out but what one camera does great in one aspect it appears to lag a bit in other areas so I have to work out what areas can I accept the lag in.

This is what I am after and prepared to spend:

Good distance zoom
Good stabilisation so I don’t have to use a tripod very often
Easy to use auto options with some option to make my own choices of scene etc
Ability to capture fast moving wildlife / pets
General use around the home, family events etc.
Good EVF
Tilting or movable LCD screen for those tricky shots & self portraits
Panorama to take those awesome scenery shots
Good in low light / twilight shots
HD Video option
Sharp images with great colour
Charging of battery not in camera
It doesn't have to fit in my pocket but not over the top heavy
I am prepared to spend up to $500 AUD (which is about the same USD at the moment)
I would like Australian warranty so this may limit online purchases to those that offer that
I love bang for my buck J

I did give some long consideration to DSLR (Sony, Cannon & Nikon) but have essentially ruled them out as even though it may give me all the above I don't think in reality that I will chop & change lens and I don't want to waste my money on something I can't just pick up and go with because I get bored of the process of using it. This may be a better option down the track should my interest continue and I outgrow the P&S I get.

What I am getting closer to deciding between:

Sony DSC hx300
Panasonic DMC FZ200

Hoping this will get me to a final decision. Thank you,

Carla

Hi,

I bought the Fujifilm F100fd on recommendations from this forum for about 4 years ago and it has been a really good camera! I have compared it with a stock Nikon D60 or Pentax k-m and the F100fd was not that far behind so the size made us keep it.

Now the battery is almost out and a new one is not that expensive but it have been 4 years and maybe we can get something a lot better?

A interested camera caught my attention, the Panasonic DMC-GF3 14 mm for about 243 EUR but im not sure this is a good buy? So what would you recommend based on this :

Budget

Less then 380 EUR

Size

It should be as small as possible, but the photo quality is important so it should at least be able to be placed in a jacket or in large pocket pants.

Features

- Quality is important, as good as possible in a small package.
- Good low light/indoors quality
- Macro
- Zoom is not necessary but is a plus
- Fast focus
- Fast startup
- It should be able to give a good point and shoot experience.

General Usage

It will be used for family photos where the photos will be placed in albums.
Most of the photos will probably be indoor.
Some times moving objects but not that often.

Miscellaneous

Fujifilm F100fd have been a impressive camera but maby the Panasonic DMC-GF3 14 mm would be a good step up?

Hello!

I have a Canon T4i, but am looking now for a point and shoot câmera, since I am traveling to Disney with my children and wanted a smaller camera. I just took a Photo course, so I've learned a little on how to take pics using manual.

I researched a lot, but didn't come to a conclusion, so I decided to write to hear from you...

Since I am using Canon, I think I should opt for a Canon as well, but if you say it does't mind, I could have another brand without problem...

Thank you very much for your help!

Luciana

Budget - I would go up to 750..

Size - compact and lighter as possible

Features - Since I undertook a photo class, want to take pics with good quality, but nothing specific.

How many megapixels will suffice for you? - same as prior question

What optical zoom will you need? think standard would be fine

How important is “image quality” to you? 8

Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)? Yes

General Usage - I want to take it where I think my DSLR is big to go with. Traveling or going out with children, for eg.

What will you generally use the camera for? Taking my family's picture

Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Not very big.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Not very much.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Movement yes, but not Sporting.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? Like canon very much, but like others as Nikon or sony as well

Are there particular models you already have in mind? Canon G12 and G1 X. I don't want the G15 one, since it does not have a flexible LCD.

Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD). Rotating LCD yes.

To start off, I bought a Nikon Coolpix P300 about a year ago and I am very happy with it. However, I am going abroad to Italy and I would like to be able to take quality pictures of sites and monuments. The Nikon does not have the best zoom. I will need a camera with a much better zoom quality. I can take both of them with me when I go abroad so the new camera does not have to have all the features of my current camera. I am afraid of shelling out a whole lot of money because I am worried that I won't use this camera much after one trip.

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
300, but that is negotiable. I am also willing to buy used. I bought my last camera on ebay for less than half the retail price.
Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
Does not matter
Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
Not sure. Enough so that I have a good quality viewing the pictures on my laptop or printing them from my photo printer. I am not a professional I just don't want things to be blurry or grainy.
* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x)
A lot of zoom is needed. Maybe not ultrazoom, but that would be nice.
* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
10
Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)?
Not necessary. It doesn't really matter. I would like an automatic option though.
General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
The camera is mainly for my trip abroad. Trips of sites, landscapes, functions, people, any experiences that I have over there. But I already have one camera so I can limit this to just more distanced shots if I must (although I would rather not)
* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
No
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
Maybe. I would like the ability to if it is not too expensive.
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Again, maybe. See above answer.
Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
No.
Are there particular models you already have in mind?
No.
(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
I have no idea. I don't think any of these things are necessary. But if you think they are necessary for my plans then go ahead and suggest them.

Good afternoon. I'm looking to replace my Samsung point & shoot since the lens keeps getting stuck. I already have a Canon Rebel XS but am looking for point n shoot for ease of travel. I've done some research but I don't see any reviews that are conclusive as to being the one camera to buy. Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated. I'm leaning more towards a weather proof/water proof camera since we tend to spend a lot of time at the pool/beach during the summer. In addition, we're going on a cruise and it would be nice to take underwater shots or at least not have to worry about having the camera at the pool or beach. The camera does not need to have an "immediate share" feature. Just decent pictures.

Thank you for your help!

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? $200 - $300 USD

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you? Compact - can put into coat pocket

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you? 10 - 14

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x) Standard optical zoom

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10) High - 9.5

Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)? nice but not necessary - the point of this camera is to not have to think.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? travel, on the go, vacation pictures, some landscapes, some monuments, people. I love my DSLR but am not comfortable taking it on vacation - don't want to have to worry about it. Plus it's not really suitable to spending time at the pool or beach.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? probably not but the possibility exists.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? yes for indoor - probably museums

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? probably not - I have the DSLR for that

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? No

Are there particular models you already have in mind? Just needs to be compatible with iMac/Apple brand computers.

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD) I'm thinking weatherproof would be nice (our vacation is taking us to a usually rainy location).

I am in the market for a new digital camera. I will be oversees for a year and hope to get some great pictures. I have also recently begun using editing software to make short films, and it is something I hope to continue doing next year.

With that in mind I am looking for a camera that has high quality HD video but can also take great pictures.

The problem is that I am by no means a seasoned photographer. I have little experience, and am anxious to learn. I was looking into entry level DSLRs such as the Canon rebel T3i or 60D. It would allow me to take great pics and vid fairly easily if I desire, and also would let me learn how to use the advance settings over time.

But there were also cameras in the category of prosumer compact, or interchangeable lens compact, that might suite me better. However it seems that many of these cameras are in the same price range as entry level DSLRs and I don't see any reason to buy them if I could get a DSLR that would allow me to grow with the camera as I hone my skills.

Any suggestions
Thanks

This short questionnaire will help the rest of us make good camera recommendations for you. Please answer each question carefully and succinctly.

The questions marked with a * are the most important.

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Roughly $500 to $600

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? The smaller and lighter, the better - if practical. I understand there are tradeoffs between quality of pictures and size of camera. Ideally, I would like something middle of the road.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you? Don't know.

* What optical zoom will you need? Ultrazoom

* How important is “image quality” to you? 7 or 8

Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)? Not important

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? Take pictures of the kids in school dance performances

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Hopefully (if the pictures are good enough)

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes, lots of indoor photos

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Yes

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? No

Are there particular models you already have in mind? No

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD) Wide Angle would be nice. Same for image stabilization

Currently have a compact "point & shoot" and an IPhone 4S. Zoom pictures come out real grainy. Would like to do better.

Thank you for your help. Off to the kid's baseball game.
