    Default how to focus

    I have a Nikon L310.
When I point the camera at what ever I want to take a picture of, I hold the shutter release button 1/2 way so the camera can focus.
The problem is it never stops focusing long enough to take a picture. The lens will move in and out and the picture in the screen will come into focus but will continue and lose focus. I have to try to snap the pic just at the right second. And that is impossible.
In addition the longer I hold the release button down the worse it gets. It not only goes in and out of focus but the camera seems to start looking around for something and will not stay centered on the subject.
Consequently the pictures look like I snapped them while swinging my arms in a circle.
What am I doing wrong? Or how do I get it to just take a picture you can see?

When you hold the shutter half-way down the camera should find a focus point and a green outline should appear around the point of focus. If the camera isn't able to lock focus either the focusing conditions are too difficult (for instance, low light or a featureless background) or there's a problem with the camera.
