Both are DSLR's and have similar picture quality. The D50 is an older camera that's missing a few of the features of the D40. Both cameras are not being produced any longer.

The big thing here is that the D50 has the inbody focus motor, which means you can use more lenses with autofocus. This would be a good way to start into DSLRs to learn on. They will produce great images. Don't be fooled by age or megapixels.

Default cant decide...

Im wanting a camera that takes good quality pictures,I'll be using it for outdoors, indoors, sports, and night photos. A camera that is user-friendly,I would prefer not to have double AA batteries..the zoom doesnt matter. The price range is any where from 150 to 600

Ive been looking at the Canon sx20 is
Nikon D4O
Nikon D3000

The Nikon D3000 is the best of the three cameras. Also since you prefer not to have AA batteries the Canon SX20 IS should be off your list as it runs on AA's.

The Nikon D3000 is very good. Possible alternatives are the Pentax K2000, Olympus E520, Sony A230 and the Canon Rebel XS.

The Olympus and Canon have "live view" which enables you to frame your picture with the LCD, like you do with point and shoot cameras.

You really can't go wrong with any of them. I advise you to try them out to see which one feels the best in the hand and has the most user friendly interface.
