The European Space Agency (ESA) has built the world's largest digital camera that is "painstakingly mosaicked together from 106 separate electronic detectors." They will be using it as part of the Galaxy-mapping Gaia mission, to detect incredibly distant stars.

Of course, such a device would never be available commercially, because it has a very limited purpose. That said, what do you think is the upward limit of megapixels that we'll see in commercially available cameras?

It depends on the size of the sensor. For the 1/2.3 inch sensors found in most point and shoot cameras, I think 12mp is ideal. Anything higher usually results in increased noise in low light images.
