    Hi everyone,

My wife is really into photography. She has had her Nikon D40 for a couple years. Recently, it broke and we sent it to Nikon for service. We are always down for used if it will save more.

    To repair just the 2170 AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6G E lens will cost $114.20.

To repair the D40 will cost $173.00.

She has wanted to better SLR for a while. So, my question is: What type of new or used camera should I get her.

    * What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.

    Less than 600

    * What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?

Mid range. Close to Nikon D40 size.

How many megapixels will suffice for you?

    * What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x)

    * How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)

Do you care for manual exposure modes (shutter priority, aperture priority, manual)?

    General Usage

    * What will you generally use the camera for?

    Taking pictures of families.

    * Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?

    No, not fast action

Are there particular brands you like or hate?

    Like Nikon

Are there particular models you already have in mind?

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

    Dont think so.

The Nikon D3200 is the most recent version of Nikon's entry-level DSLR. It's very good and has a 24 megapixel sensor, as well as the features you'd expect from a DSLR in its class.
    Here are some sample photos:
