    Hi,
I would like to save the metering function setting (in this case 'spot'), so that when I start my camera, that metering mode is in effect. Can this be done?
    Thanks,

Yes, as long as your camera is in one of the manual modes or program mode the metering setting you previously selected will be the default setting. But as long as the camera is in auto mode it will use the evaluative metering setting.

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for replying. My S5 will retain the 'evaluative' and 'centered weighted avg.' but it will not retain the 'spot'. Perhaps there's something wrong with it??

Not likely. Even DSLR cameras can be a little "odd" about just what combination of settings they will hold over a power OFF / ON cycle.
