Hello, I am planning to get a Canon DC this Christmas. I currently own another brand camera and I'm unimpressed with the photos taken during night times. I've read pretty good reviews for both SD850 IS and SD870 IS. More leaning toward SD850 IS since 870IS doesn't have an optical viewer. Any other input from other users about why 870IS might be better than 850IS aside from the wider angle? Are either of these cameras good for taking night scenes?

    Thank you.

You've basically hit the differences as I understand them.

Given the noise seen in images from both of these camersa, for night shots they're probably won't be great, but they're toward the good side of the middle, if that makes sense. Having never shot night scenes with the one of these I've used (the SD870 IS), I'm doing some guess work here based on what I know.

What are you comparing it against, if I may ask?

Then do you have any suggestions on which compact P&S camera would have better night scene shooting?

    Missed this before. Sorry.

I think the Nikon S700 has some of the smoothest high-ISO image quality, which should make it good for night shooting. None of the Canon SDs that I've seen are terrible in terms of noise, but I haven't used them specifically for night shots so its hard to say how much the large fields of shadow will be grainy.

    I'd start with these.

Just don't expect much because the physics of tiny CCD's and high MP count makes for poor low light performance.

    Hello,

I lost the battery to my canon 870IS.
What kind of battery should I buy and anyone has some ideas on how much it would cost.

    Greatly Appreciated.
