Casio introduces today the Exilim Zoom EX-Z280 and EX-Z33, two slim cameras they hope will attract first-time as well as more experienced digital photographers. The Z280 offers more of the fancy stuff, like 720p video and sensor-shift image stabilization, and the back-to-basics Z33 features a 10.1 megapixel CCD and Casio's tried and true YouTube video recording mode.

The 12.1 megapixel Exilim Zoom EX-Z280 features image sensor-shift stabilization, a welcome feature in a pocket-sized camera. The "Zoom" in the camera's name refers to a 26mm wide angle lens with 4x optical zoom. An Exilim Engine 4.0 does the processing work, and a 2.7 inch LCD resides on the back panel.

YouTube mode offers quick access to a reduced resolution video recording mode designed for easy file transfer to the popular video sharing site. A higher-res 720p video recording mode is also available.

Given that the two cameras announced today share identically sized sensors, we hope that the result of more megapixels in the Z280 isn't loads of noisy photographs in mid to high ISO settings. But all things equal, this is not an altogether bad package for well under $200.

The Exilim Zoom EX-Z33 fits nicely into the basic point-and-shoot category. It's equipped with a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5 inch LCD. It records standard resolution and 16:9 widescreen video, and a simplified "Easy Mode" will pare down camera settings to a very beginner-friendly minimum.

    Pricing and availability
The Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z280 and Exilim Zoom EX-Z33 will become available in September. The Z280 starts at $179.99 and the Z33 at $119.99.
