I've been using the 10-second automatic photo to take photos of myself
facing the camera from about 8 feet away. But the photos are not sharp.. How can I
    get them to be sharper?

If you have your camera set to AUTO and the room is well-lit, your photos should be quite sharp.

I can't set my camera to AUTO. I had to set it so that the flash is turned off,
because the flash was making everything look bad: it was putting out too much
    light and ruined the photos.

You can turn off the flash when the mode dial of the camera is set to auto. On page 74 of your manual it says, in the box next to Flash Off, "Does not fire even if the built-in flash pops up. This is not selectable when the mode dial is set to P, A, S or M." In other words you can select Flash Off when the mode dial is set to AUTO.

Where do I find the manual? I had been using it, and now I can't find it.

    Thanks,

Yes, you've given me the link, but page 74 doesn't answer my question.
