How to retrieve corrupted photos on data DVD?

I burned some high quality photos to a DVD a few months ago, and now when I try to copy the files to my new external hardrive, I notice some of the files won't copy, and freeze up windows. Sometimes a warning comes up says, there is a I/O problem, or cycle redundancy error, other times it just freezes on one file, while others copy fine. I am worried because about 20% of my pictures are still on the discs, and I want them on my drive where they are safe.

My question is what can I do to retrieve the corrupted files?

    Thanks

I use a free program to burn data onto DVD's. I've found it to be very reliable. Maybe it will be able to copy your data and move it to your PC.

Also one thing that I recommend is using another reader especially a powerful external one. I had the same problem but with some video files and I borrowed a powerful external DVD-RW and copied all the files without any problem and much faster.
I don't know if this makes sense to you.
