I am a beginner, and i want to buy a good point and shoot digital camera, i am confused between sx510 & DSC H300, as sx510 offers 30 optical zoom where as DSC offers a better 35 optical zoom, but comes with the lower battery life and old technology of CCD sensor as compare to CMOS censor.
Please guide me which lense technology is better and which camera is better considering overall features and specs.

The Canon SX510hs is the superior camera despite the fact that it has slightly less optical zoom (30x vs 35x).
The Canon has a superior CMOS sensor vs CCD for the Sony
The Canon is better in low light
The Canon has a 1080 video mode vs 720 for the Sony
The Canon uses a rechargeable battery vs AA's for the Sony.
The Canon is much smaller and lighter in weight than the Sony.

The Sony has an auto panorama mode, which the Canon lacks, but this advantage for the Sony is far outweighed by the other factors I noted above.

    Here are some sample pics:

Thankyou Andy, but my budget is now limited and I have to choose between Canon SX170 IS and Sony DSC H300, what would you suggest now? still canon is better or should i go with SX510hs because of budget constraint. Waiting for you reply

It's hard to say which is better - it depends on your needs.
The Canon is quicker, smaller and lighter in weight, plus its rechargeable battery is better than the Sony's AA's. However, the Sony has a much longer zoom (35x vs 16x) and an auto-panorama mode. But if these features aren't essential, I think the Canon SX170 is the better camera, overall.

The SX510 hs is significantly better than both the SX170 and the H300, though.
