I have a nikon D2x and a Nikon D3000. I have got a couple of Jessops nikon dedicated flash guns. When using the gun on the 3000 it works fine, in both manual and auto mode. When on the D2X I have to use everything in manual mode, the camera does not recognise the flash. My question is... is it because the flash is newer than the camera? would the same happen if I buy an SB600 or SB900

I've shot a D2x with an SB800 and had full functionality - the SB600 is a similar generation flash and should be fine.

You might be on the right track suspecting the older camera doesn't recognize the newer flash in the case of the Jessops, but I think newer generation Nikon units will work since they're part of Nikon's Creative Lighting System as well. You might not have full functionality on some special features, but I suspect you'd have TTL and manual at least with an SB900 or 700.

Probably wouldn't hurt to try a hands-on in the store with a prospective flash before making the buy.
