Optical vs Digital zoom...

    Digital zoom is better than cropping on your computer pretty much by luck of the draw. It is possible that some cameras do it better (have better scaling algorithms) than some software packages but only published reviews or word of mouth or your own experience (with the various respective cameras and software packages) will tell you so.

    I never use the digital zoom on my camera, just letting the overall zoom max out when the optical zoom has maxed out.

    I agree with J. Keenan. I can imagine a few limited times when I would use it, but 99.9% of the time you could do the same with your computer, and you only risk losing part of the picture that you want and losing image quality.
