A friend looked at my camera and said that he had a problem with the 28-300mm lens. He said it was too small (compared to his nikon) and that it had an unusual 28-300configuration.:(

I am an amateur and don't know about such things.

He is a Nikon owner, knows his stuff and takes really nice pictures. ;)

Is he right or is this a phony 1:2.8-4.9 zoom lens;Something along the lines of the $50 point and shoot cameras that claim to have high quality german lenses.

    Thanks in advance.

There's nothing wrong with your lens. The S9000 is a very fine ultrazoom that comes with a very good Fuji lens which is permanently attached to the camera. You cannot remove the lens and replace it with something else.

Your friend probably owns a Nikon DSLR which is a different type of camera that uses interchangeable lenses. A DSLR is a higher quality camera than the S9000 but that doesn't mean the S9000 is a bad camera - to the contrary, it was probably the best ultrazoom available at the time of its release.

the S9000/S9600 is a super zoom Prosumer camera and the lens IS a 28-300mm lens.

your friend most likely never owned such a camera before and so told you some nonsense.

He may knew HIS stuff, but the scope of his knowledge must be extremely limited.

It is a lens. It comes in a point and shoot camera. It is NOT a DSLR.

Of course the lens is smaller than a 28-300 lens for a DSLR. Does your friend think the lenses on the current crop of ultrazoom cameras are phony too? The Canon SX30is has a 24-840 mm lens. As far as I know, there's nothing comparable for a Nikon DSLR. Phony??

The advantage of the S9000 lens compared to other comparable cameras is that it can be zoomed manually and silently, does not automatically protrude when the camera is turned on and has threads for filters. The disadvantages is that it's much bigger than most 10X zoom cameras and does not have a mechanical manual-focus mode. The first disadvantage can actually be an advantage in that it makes the camera (arguably) easier to handle.
