The lens on my 2 year old PowerShot A1200 will not retract when you switch the camera off. It merely says 'Lens error Will shut down automatically Restart camera.' Switching the camera off does not have any effect. Is there a simple solution or is the lens motor kaput?
The camera has not been abused or got gritty. Suggestions please :)

First of all check your batteries. A fresh set of batteries will often solve the problem.

If the lens error persists you may have something in the lens mechanism - a grain of sand is sufficient to trigger the shutdown. You may be able to get the obstruction out with a blast of compressed air or a light tapping of the lens. If this doesn't work the camera may have to be professionally repaired.

Thank yopu Andy. I have tried new batteries, so it looks like a professional repair :-(
