    What are RAW files?
Is it an actual file name/extension like JPEG?

If I want to view photo information in Photoshop, must I use RAW files?
If so, how do I select this format, I assume not all cameras have the option?

RAW files are the "raw" output from the image sensor. If your camera can shoot RAW files, you probably have software from the manufacturer that can read and edit RAW files (since they have slighly differing formats).

If a camera can shoot raw files, is this found in the options/settings somewhere where you set pictures sizes etc?
I know every camera is different, but Im assuming this is where its found?

Yes, that is where you usually find it. On my Olympus, you set all the image quality/size and decide whether to shoot RAW or TIFF all in the same menu.

My camera only seems to have options for JPEG and TIFF, does that sound correct to you?
Its a Canon SD model, one of the older ones around 1.5 years old.
Maybe I dont have RAW on my camera?

The SD cameras have not been able to shoot RAW. However, TIFF is a format that produces less compressed images than JPEG.

    Ok thanks for explaining everyone.
I assume my FZ20 cant shoot raw files?
I can shoot TIFF but those files are huge so I've never used them.

The FZ20 does not shoot RAW files. The TIFF files produced by your camera are so large since they're not compressed into JPEG format.

Excuse me for dropping in like this, but what is the difference between RAW and TIFF? I thought they were both the same in quality since (it is my presumption) that none of the two are compressed?

while it is true that neither is compressed, isn't it also true that RAW captures extra data about the picture, such as white balance and contrast?
