Default Need good camera for indoor sports/wrestling/concerts?

    Hello all,

I've found this forum to be very helpful but I'm still having a little trouble deciding what to buy. It seems like a lot of cameras just don't work well indoors for basketball games, concerts or wrestling events. I am looking for something around $250. I know considering the price it's not gonna be the best but I just want to be able to take clear pictures at indoor events. I don't need anything fancy. My main and pretty much only purpose is to get vey clear pictures.

    Thanks all!

That's the most important reason for taking pictures but, for $250, you're going to have to make compromises.

For low light shooting, among the best cameras for $250 and under are probably the F100fd, F60fd and S2000hd, and the Sony H10 and W150. They will give you very clear pictures in low light some of the time - more often than competing cameras in their price range.

Thanks Andy, I appreciate the helpful response. Most of the sporting events and wrestling shows are bright lights. My friend once used an expensive Sony and pictures came out horrible. I guess it wasn't equipped for indoor bright lighting. Knowing this, would I need something other than what you mentioned?

The lighting will still be much dimmer than in outdoor events and your flash won't help you at all in a large arena.

However, upon further consideration, I don't think you'd be happy with a camera that has less than a 10x optical zoom to enable you to shoot from a long distance. That leaves the Sony H10 and Fuji S2000hd. There are other cameras with long zooms but they are either more expensive than $250, don't have manual exposure controls (important for low light shooting), or get really noisy when shooting in low light.

Thanks Andy. I figured it'd be hard to find something good in that price range but sadly I just can't afford anything else right now. I guess I'll look around and if not just use my crappy camera that barely works indoors and hope for the best

Did I give you the impression there was something wrong with the Sony H10 or the Fuji S2000hd? If so I apologize. Both of them are are very good cameras and good buys at their current prices.

Sorry Andy. It was my fault I just misinterpreted what you said. I've through a ton of reviews and the Sony seems to be fairing better. Most people say for indoor events the zoom works really well. Have you heard similar things?

The Sony probably has better picture quality overall. The Sony is also smaller and lighter in weight. But the Fuji has good picture quality, a longer optical zoom, a wider angle lens and an electronic viewfinder. They are probably equal in their ability to take pictures under low light conditions.

Here are some sample pics from the Sony and the Fuji:

WOW, those pictures look great. I guess for the price you can't really go wrong with either one.

Andy, what about a camera with a flash boot and a big flash like the Sunpak 383 with its 120 guide number? I'd think that'd be bright enough to put out enough light from the front rows of the bleachers if the lens isn't zoomed. Unfortunately that pushes the price up to about $400. For that price I'd watch out for the Pentax K2000 kit again. Its bigger sensor and flash gun should help immensely with indoor shots, but unfortunately that kit doesn't come with a big zoom lens.
