Canon T3i or Nikon 5100
Time for me upgrade to the DSLR's. The 2 in my budget are the 5100 and the t3i. I have no lens so I would have to start this year with the kit lens on both models.
The only thing I have that might need to be changed is my flash (Speedlite 430EX II) if I go with the Nikon. But I got a killer deal on craigslist when i bought it. So selling it for a profit wouldn't bother me.
I have heard the Nikon takes better pictures but is slower to focus?
Out of the two which would you recommend?
Most of my pictures are outdoor rock crawling (Jeeps) and family indoor with the flash.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Canon T3i or Nikon 5100
Both are popular. You're right about the Canon flash not being compatible with the Nikon body. If you do replace the Canon flash, consider an independent brand with manual control. Those will work on any brand of DSLR (except Sony).
The Nikon sensor has an edge at very high ISO for low light shooting, without flash. But I would not go so far as to say that means better pictures! None of the cameras at this price level have lightning AF, though all of them will seem way ahead of the typical point-and-shoot on that score. I would not be concerned about alleged AF differences.
Rock crawling Jeeps sounds like a great opportunity for video. Canon has long held a slight edge there. Indoors with flash, the results will depend a whole lot more on your skills with flash than on which body is used.

I suggest handling the cameras. They have quite a different feel.
My Gear:
Panasonic FZ28
Canon Elph 110 HS
Canon A720IS (retired)

Thanks guys I appreciate the input. Heading off to the store to handle both before going any farther.
Sounds like advice I should follow.

The big box stores will have the display camera on a security cable, which is a royal pain in the a**. If you can find a real camera store they should be able to show you the camera without the *&^%$# cable.
