Default Need help buying a camera for family/everyday life!

Hoping someone out there can help me. I am looking to buy a new camera - to use for family/kids/dog mostly. Just want to be able to get high quality pictures out of it. I plan on spending around $400, give or take a little. I don't want the bulkiness of a DSLR camera, but don't need it to be tiny either. I have dont a little research and the following cameras seem to fit my need:

    Sony Nex 3N
    Fujifilm F900ERX
    Samsung NX1100
    Nikon 1 J1

Anyone have any insight or other suggestions? I'd appreciate any help!

    Thanks!
    Liz

Here are a few things to consider about the cameras on your list.

The Sony and Samsung have the largest sensor - the size of a DSLR. The Nikon also has a relatively large sensor and the Fuji's sensor is slightly larger than that used in most compact cameras. A larger sensor usually indicates superior image quality, especially in low light.

The Sony, Samsung and Nikon do not have built-in lenses. You have to switch lenses if you want a long zoom, for instance. The Fuji has only one lens, but it's very versatile, allowing you to take ultra-close macros and long range zoom shots (a 20x optical zoom). On the other hand lens quality is going to be superior in the separate lenses of the Sony, Samsung and Nikon.

The Samsung does not have a built-in flash. If you want flash capability you'll have to attach the flash to the camera's hot-shoe. Samsung does provide the flash along with the camera.

Except for the Fuji, that is the "mirrorless" market. And there are lots of differences between the various models for that market. Links to more rambles on camera selection -
