Default Is this a good camera for an intermediate-level user?

    Hi,

I have a simple point-and-shoot from Canon, but I want to ante up and go for a slightly more sophisticated tools. I came across EOS rebel T3i on sale on the Canon e-store.

Is the model and the price good as a first DSLR?

Yes, it's very good. Its kit lens has only a 3x optical zoom so you'll probably want to purchase a long zoom lens sometime in the future.

I agree, a very good choice. The Canada site for Amazon also shows the Fujifilm X-A1 and Panasonic G5 for around $400 CDN. These have the advantage of being more compact than a true DSLR. But if you want to save $$ on future lens purchases, the Canon is still your best bet.
